We Need To Talk About AI

Not all AI is created equal. Beneath the single label ‘AI’ sits everything from rigorously validated, life-saving medical systems to lightly engineered digital companions optimised for engagement and distraction. We often speak about AI as though it were one single entity. It isn’t and the distinction matters.

In the March 2026 edition of The Digital Detox Guide, I explore a growing concern: What happens when convenience quietly replaces thinking?

This month’s issue examines:
• The hidden cost of AI convenience
• Are we losing our human identity to technology?
• A perfect storm: will AI fracture human connection?
• What is an AI detox?
• Cognitive offloading: the long view
• The three-step AI Detox Challenge

We often frame the future as a divide between people who use AI and people who don’t. That’s probably wrong as most people will use it. Perhaps the more meaningful divide may be between people who retain core cognitive capabilities and those who gradually outsource them entirely.

The Digital Detox Guide is a monthly Substack publication designed to help readers reduce overwhelm and use technology more consciously — without disconnecting from the modern world.
