Understanding Digital Detox 💭

What is a digital detox?

  • A digital detox is a period when you intentionally disconnect from screens and devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers and you’re offline.
  • It can be as short as 20 seconds, if you are resting your eyes from staring at a screen, or as long as spending a week in nature, and everything in-between.
  • A digital detox helps us support what we need as biological humans to thrive and be at our best.
  • You can think of it as your digital habit ‘off switch’.
  • But a real digital detox is not a one off event, rather a lifestyle change, one that supports your wellbeing and becomes part of your daily life.

Why is digital wellbeing important?

  • Digital wellbeing helps maintain a healthy balance between the demands of the online world and our needs as biological and social humans beings.
  • It supports our mental and physical health, helps manage stress, improves sleep, and strengthens relationships by encouraging us to be fully present. It allows us to be more in control of our attention, thoughts and choices.
  • When used mindfully, technology enhances life rather than overwhelms it.

Is a digital detox the same as quitting technology?

  • No — it’s not about giving up technology altogether.
  • It’s about living and working sustainably and productively with technology by setting healthy boundaries, creating regular breaks and protecting our sleep.

What are the benefits of a digital detox?

  • Reduced anxiety and stress
  • More meaningful social connections
  • Improved concentration and productivity
  • Better sleep
  • More time for offline activities

Can I do a digital detox while working full-time?

  • Yes. Focus on taking regular breaks to restore your focus, manage information overload and stress. These could be at coffee breaks, mealtimes or simply when you feel your energy levels drop.
  • If you can, adopt mindful email habits, and have clear boundaries between when you are at work and your personal life.

What is an AI detox?

An AI detox is where you intentionally abstain from using AI tools when working online, choosing instead to undertake selected tasks using either your own knowledge and skills or learning new knowledge and skills in order to complete a task.

You can think of an AI detox as a long term investment in your own ability to think for yourself in areas that matter most to you and your future.

How long should a digital detox last?

It depends on your lifestyle and goals.

  • If you work or study online, aim for regular screen breaks throughout the day.
  • At weekends start with a few screen-free hours and gradually extend them as it becomes easier.

How often should I do a digital detox?

  • Everyday. Aim for regular screen-free moments and built them into your daily routine as these are the most effective in building healthier digital habits.
  • Take longer digital detox breaks during activities and holidays as these are important in building your digital resilience.

What are some easy daily habits for digital wellbeing?

If you want to spend less time on your phone, the easiest way is to change the environment that triggers them.

  • Keep devices out of the bedroom.
  • Create tech-free zones (e.g. bedroom or a no phone rule at mealtimes).
  • Enjoy regular time outdoors or with others, phone-free.
  • Take part in our digital detox challenges.

Small changes add up to big results.

How do I avoid relapsing after a digital detox?

  • Digital detox is not a one off event, rather a lifestyle change, one that supports your wellbeing and becomes an important part of your daily life. To create long lasting healthy digital habits takes time.
  • After a digital detox holiday or break make sure that you continue with small daily digital detox routines — such as regular breaks, no-screens an hour before you go to bed, no phones at mealtimes or when out with friends.
  • Do it with an accountability partner.
  • Don't worry if you relapse, just pick yourself up and start again.

Mental Health & Lifestyle

How does screen time affect my mental health?

  • Excessive screen time can increase stress, anxiety, and FOMO (fear of missing out).
  • It can impact your sleep, physical activity, quality of diet, relationships and increase loneliness. All of which are important for our long-term health and wellbeing.

Can a digital detox help with sleep problems?

  • Yes. Using screens at night overstimulates the brain, making it harder to unwind and go to sleep.
  • There is also some evidence that reducing blue light exposure before bed improves melatonin levels and sleep quality.
  • Try keeping your phone well away from your bed, preferably in another room.

Does a digital detox help prevent burnout?

  • Yes it helps create resilience, however burnout results from unresolved chronic stress at work.
  • Regularly stepping away from screens during the day gives your brain and body time to recover and reduce the cumulative build-up of stress. However
  • Although a digital detox helps create resilience, it can't solve work related stress resulting from being overloaded with work, feeling of lack of control and recognition, toxic work culture and other contributory factors identified in by World Health Organisation.

Other measures that help reduce stress and improve resilience to burnout include:

  • Sleep – Try to get a good night’s sleep, every night.
  • Prioritize & reduce multitasking – work on priorities one at a time
  • Talk to someone - in person and be fully present
  • Exercise - Physical, breathing and meditation
  • Nature – Take a walk in a garden, park or the countryside.

If you feel you are suffering from chronic stress or burnout you should immediately seek the help of a medical professional.

Are there risks to doing a digital detox?

Usual Not, but you might initially feel a little isolated or anxious when offline, so it’s important to plan ahead by letting friends and family know, scheduling enjoyable offline activities, and avoiding complete isolation.

*If you are suffering from loneliness or poor mental health you should seek advice from a medical professional before undertaking a digital detox.

What can I do instead of scrolling?

Do something that you enjoy — Try chatting to friends, reading a book, cooking a special, exercising or go to a class, going for a walk inn nature, or take up a creative hobby.

Is a digital detox suitable for children or teenagers?

Yes, with parental guidance.
Encourage outdoor play, shared family activities, screen-free meals, and agree “family tech rules”.
Children learn best by example and engaging with the world around them.

Tools, Support & Motivation🛠️

Are there apps that help with digital wellbeing?

The greatest benefits will come from spending more time offline.

  • There are useful tools such as Digital Wellbeing (Android) and Screen Time (iOS) that track screen use and set limits.
  • There are also many other digital wellbeing themed apps that provide guidance and promote offline activities.
However, their effectiveness can be limited as they generally still require you to be on your phone.

Do you offer coaching or digital detox programmes?

  • Yes. We offer 7-day and 30-day guided detox programmes with daily tips, reflections, and practical guidance to help you reset your digital habits.
  • We also offer 1:1 coaching.

Long-Term Mindful and Intentional Tech Use

What’s the difference between digital detox and digital mindfulness?

  • Digital detox is not a one off event, rather a lifestyle change, one that helps to create new digital habits that support your wellbeing and becomes part of your daily life.
  • Digital mindfulness incorporates digital detox and is a long-term awareness and intentional relationship with technology, helping you stay balanced in the long term.

Can I still be productive if I reduce my screen time?

Yes, most people become more productive by being able to perform at their best through regular breaks, better quality sleep and fewer distractions.

Is digital wellbeing realistic in a tech-driven world?

  • Yes. In fact it’s essential to be able to live and work productively, healthily and sustainably with technology.
  • It’s not about rejecting technology; it’s about using it consciously and intentionally to support your goals.

And Finally

A digital detox isn’t about perfection — it’s about progress.
Small, consistent steps can transform how you relate to technology and how you feel every day.
